Spain’s first retrospective on the North American artist proposes an interpretation of her work in which the origins of video installation are seen as deeply tied to performance, action, and the particular concept of time as an integral part of the work of art. As one of the pioneering artists of performance, experimental film, and video installation, Jonas has used her work to reconsider the clichés of femininity, in which she deconstructs the image of Woman and her stereotypical behavior. The root of Jonas’ work is in the mythical figures of antiquity, the epic poem and rituals, traditional dance, and shamanistic practices. The archaic is associated with hyper-modern images that we have become used to in recent years, where the cinematographic paradigm has paved the way for theatre’s new appearence, which is strongly inspired by poetic experience.
