Documenting Urs Fischer´s solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Vienna in 2012, Skinny Sunrise presents a survey of the Swiss artist´s oeuvre from the late 1990s through to today curated by Gerald Matt and Angela Stief.
Fischer´s striking and often humorous works transcend genres to engage in radical spatial interventions through investigations of gravity, materiality, and scale.
Challenging static representations in art, Fischer has made sculptures that depict mechanical processes or incorporate ephemeral materials such as fruit and melting wax, whose forms are continually in flux and evolve and disintegrate over the course of the exhibition.
Among the new sculptures produced for the exhibition is Fischer´s first candle self-portrait, which is set alight and slowly burns down throughout the exhibition, like his installation at the Biennale di Venezia in 2011, which was described as ´the single most stunning new piece anywhere´ in the Biennale by the Financial Times.
