From the development of the American West in the 19th century, America space be it the tract house, automobile, office, shopping mall or museum became representative of the utopian capitalist ideology that formed the landscape itself. This richly illustrated book contains a series of essays on the connections between the idea of utopia and of the means used to imagine and construct them. Contrary to European perceptions, such American spaces have not emerged from a tabula rasa, but from free adaptations of European models of urban design, at the level of territory and typology.
