Dutch Cityscapes of the Golden Age

Dutch society in the Golden Age was predominantly an urban one. From 1600 onwards the cities of the new Republic expanded rapidly and experienced a period of unprecedented flowering of culture and affluence. The pride burghers felt for the beauty and prosperity of their town, with its old and new monuments, was reflected in the popularity of cityscapes. This catalogue gives a survey of the genre, in which Vermeer´s View of Delft is undoubtedly the high point.
